ENHYPEN Review: How a Vampire Universe Walked Out of the Album and Into 80+ Regions

On November 30, 2020, seven young men debuted with BORDER : DAY ONE. Throughout the run of the survival show I-LAND, viewer votes had narrowed the lineup down, and the entire process — right up to the moment the final seven were confirmed — aired on television. That origin came with a label attached: a group assembled by a major label and a broadcaster, with nothing left to prove on its own.

Six years later, on August 21, 2026, ENHYPEN released their eighth mini album THE SIN : BLISS. It sold 1,774,829 copies on its first day alone, and over those six years the group has placed six consecutive albums in the Billboard 200’s top 10.

But sales figures are not what this ENHYPEN review is about. What the group actually pulled off over the past six years sits somewhere many K-pop acts have attempted and few have carried through to the end: they took a story that lived inside an album and moved it outside.

The Story That Didn’t End With the Album

Fictional universes are common currency in K-pop. Assigning a concept to each album, planting symbols in the music video, letting fans decode them — plenty of groups work this way. In most cases, the decoding stays sealed inside the albums and the videos.

ENHYPEN’s universe runs in two layers. The first is the coming-of-age trilogy that carried them from debut through 2022. The BORDER series set them at the edge of a threshold, the DIMENSION series traced the conflict and the choice that came with standing there, and the MANIFESTO series delivered a declaration that they would decide their own path. The structure was built so that the debut narrative and the album narrative could be read on top of each other.

The second layer is the vampire saga that began with DARK BLOOD in 2023. Running through ORANGE BLOOD, ROMANCE : UNTOLD, and DESIRE : UNLEASH into the THE SIN series, this arc advances with narrative hinges placed between albums. MEMORABILIA, the special album released in May 2024, took the universe itself as its subject outright.

Up to this point, it reads as well-built concept planning. The place where it actually diverges comes next.

This universe shares its story with DARK MOON: The Blood Altar, serialized on Naver Webtoon. The webtoon began its run in January 2022 and had passed 200 million cumulative global views as of July 2025. That means a path opened up for webtoon readers outside the artist’s fandom to encounter the story first and arrive at the group afterward. In November 2025, the follow-up DARK MOON: Two Moons launched simultaneously across six countries and regions.

Then, in January 2026, the story became an animated series. Produced as twelve episodes, it began airing in Japan on January 9, reached Korea the following day, and rolled out to more than 80 regions. A K-pop group’s fictional universe traveling through a webtoon and all the way into animation is still an uncommon outcome.

Plenty of groups have built intricate narratives, TOMORROW X TOGETHER of the same label family among them. Where ENHYPEN differs is less about the polish of the story than about pushing it into a form that media outside music can consume independently. The fact that ENGENE, the fandom name, occupies the position of the mortal a vampire loves within the universe is part of the same architecture.

When the Concept Shifts, So Does the Genre

Groups that lead with a fictional universe run into a recurring problem: the concept keeps expanding while the music stays put. However intricate the narrative, if the songs don’t follow, the universe remains a setting printed on the album jacket.

Play through ENHYPEN’s discography in order and the trace of sound moving along with story is fairly clear.

Their debut single “Given-Taken” was polished R&B-based dance pop. It laid down a gothic atmosphere while staying firmly within rookie-group grammar. On “Drunk-Dazed” from BORDER : CARNIVAL, band textures and retro synths moved to the front and the sound turned considerably rougher.

The shift became unmistakable once the vampire saga began. In 2023, “Bite Me” stepped away from the prevailing fourth-generation boy group grammar of high-register rapping over hard beats, leading instead with near-whispered vocals and minimal dark R&B. “Sweet Venom,” released the same year, pushed that texture somewhere softer and more sensual. It is also a title track that member Jay co-wrote and co-composed.

Then, with “Knife” from THE SIN : VANISH in January 2026, they turned toward rap-driven trap. On an album about being hunted after breaking a taboo, the sound sharpened accordingly. Measured against the debut single, that is a considerable distance traveled.

“Bite Me” has surpassed 527.57 million streams on Spotify, becoming the group’s first track to clear 500 million, and their cumulative playback has passed 7.6 billion. As of August 2026, monthly listeners stand at around 8.94 million and followers at 15.68 million.

Members have also been appearing in the credits more often. The trend is no longer unfamiliar in K-pop — groups that put member-led creation front and center from debut now exist — but in ENHYPEN’s case that share grew in stages across successive releases. The 2024 fan song “Highway 1009” credits every member as a lyricist, and four of them earned their first copyright credit through it. The number 1009 in the title comes from October 9, 2020, the day the fandom name ENGENE was announced. Leader Jungwon contributed to the topline composition of “Hundred Broken Hearts,” and Jake wrote and composed the fan song “Shout Out.”

Carrying the Story With the Body

The stage is where this group transmits its universe most directly. ENHYPEN’s choreography tends to be designed less around locking movements into precise unison than around reconstructing the scene a song contains. That is also why props and space get used so actively and why staging carries so much weight.

The roles divide clearly among the members. Sunghoon competed as a figure skater before his debut, and the balance he trained for in those years is often said to show in the line of his turns and jumps. Maknae Ni-ki, as main dancer, holds the reference line for the group choreography. Leader Jungwon and Jay drive the stage energy with weight-loaded movement, while Sunoo carries the job of delivering a song’s emotion through expression.

The world tours are where this capacity shows most plainly. And the change in tour scale is the driest available indicator of how the group has grown.

Table 1. Growth in ENHYPEN’s world tour scale

Tour Period Scale Attendance
MANIFESTO Sep 2022 – Feb 2023 22 shows approx. 240,000
FATE Jul 2023 – Sep 2024 42 shows approx. 558,000
WALK THE LINE Oct 2024 – Oct 2025 32 shows across 19 cities approx. 676,000

They entered Japan’s Kyocera Dome just two years after debut, then widened the stage to Tokyo Dome and to stadiums in the United States. Across three tours, attendance grew close to threefold.

What accumulated showed up at the awards shows as well. At MAMA, held on November 28, 2025, at Kai Tak Stadium in Hong Kong, ENHYPEN took the Visa Fans’ Choice of the Year — a category decided entirely by global fan voting. It was the group’s first daesang. Their album bonsang at the Golden Disc Awards has run five consecutive years, from 2022 through 2026.

A New Chapter Opened by Six

In March 2026, ENHYPEN was restructured as a six-member group. From the seven-member lineup they had held since debut, Heeseung stepped out to become a solo artist and began preparing new activities at the same label. The label stated that the decision respected his distinct musical direction. Since then, Jungwon, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki have continued as six.

THE SIN : BLISS is the first album to arrive after that restructuring. It was released on August 21, 2026, with ten tracks.

The title track “Bloody Paradise” picks up the story from the previous release. If THE SIN : VANISH was the passage where lovers who broke a taboo began to be hunted, this album takes up the point where, with that flight still underway, the two treat each other as their only refuge. The paradox of accepting a dangerous reality as paradise sits right there in the title.

On release day the album sold 1,774,829 copies and topped Hanteo’s daily album chart. For reference, the group’s highest first-week figure to date is the 2,344,749 copies of ROMANCE : UNTOLD in 2024, and the preceding THE SIN : VANISH recorded 2,075,056. Cumulative album sales since debut have passed 20 million.

The ongoing world tour BLOOD SAGA is scheduled for more than 30 shows across 21 cities. It opened in Seoul in May, and in July it ran through São Paulo, Lima, and Mexico City, completing the group’s first Latin American dates. In early 2027 it continues through Milan, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin before reaching London’s O2 Arena.

Six years ago, the line attached to them was that they had nothing to prove on their own. In the time since, this group has carried its story out of the album and into the hands of webtoon readers and animation viewers, and has kept moving that story through music and through the stage. Now that they are six, the story sits in the middle of a chapter that has not finished.
